Mission & Values:
The Women’s & Gender Studies Option at Brookdale Community College is a learner and community-centered program of study; a strong and viable Women & Gender Studies program is essential to promoting and enhancing the College’s stated “Vision, Values, Mission and Goals”. Our Humanities AA Option prepares students to engage and respond to their communities and social networks as ethical leaders by providing them with a feminist curriculum dedicated to diversity and in support of the College’s stated “Diversity Commitment”; a safe and challenging learning environment which promotes student-centered praxis and community engagement through service learning; and the tools to think critically about gender and its intersections with other relations of power as they become global citizens who value life-long learning and social justice.
- We value learner and community-centered education
- We value feminist pedagogy, curriculum, assessment and praxis
- We value our students’ lives and experiences, in all their diversity
Leadership & Governance:
Women’s & Gender Studies at Brookdale is not a single department or discipline, but a multidisciplinary field of study managed by a collaborative team of engaged and practicing feminist scholars, faculty, students, staff and community members committed to the complementary stated missions of the Option and the College. We welcome all members of the Brookdale Community who are interested in feminist, community and learning-centered pedagogy and service to join the Women’s Studies Option Committee in order to strengthen, grow and develop our Option and our commitment to ethical, feminist public service, scholarship and leadership.
