About the Basic Skills Program
Basic skills courses in math, reading and writing are available for students needing additional reinforcement in order to be successful in college level courses. Many college level courses require pre-requisite math, reading and writing skills and the basic skills courses help students satisfy these needs.
The typical student entering community college must be evaluated for placement regarding basic skills courses. A student must satisfy basic skill pre-requisites. The student can accomplish this in one of two ways:
- By demonstrating knowledge of basic skills math, reading and writing on the Accuplacer or with SAT scores.
- By taking the necessary basic skills courses.
The Accuplacer is the placement tool that all New Jersey Community Colleges use to determine if students require remediation in Math, Reading or Writing.
