About English as a Second Language
Hundreds of students from many countries come to Brookdale to study English as a Second Language each semester. The Language Department employs experts in second language acquisition and offers an inviting atmosphere to cultural diversity. Brookdale’s ESL program is open to anyone 18 years of age or older who wants to improve his / her spoken and written English, either to pursue a college degree or for personal development. Students must have a minimal command of the language to qualify for this program.

Brookdale’s ESL Courses
Brookdale offers seven levels of ESL ranging from beginning to advanced. All new ESL students are tested and carefully placed in the correct level. Classes focus on the development of conversation, grammar, and writing skills. Supplementary courses are also available in pronunciation, idiomatic expressions, American culture, and writing through reading.
Free ESL tutoring is available to all enrolled ESL students. Brookdale’s ESL program features an 18-station computer lab equipped with ESL learning software. Staff assisted open lab hours are available to students who wish to reinforce their classroom learning.
Starting in Spring 2014, Brookdale Community College will offer a full time ESL program. International students must apply through the International Education Center. International students will have to take the ESL Placement Test at Brookdale’s Testing Center, but will first need to contact the International Education Center.
